Project Overview
The British Sikh Report is an annual publication offering in-depth insights into Sikh life in the UK. It covers demographics, employment, education, and health. Furthermore, its focus shifts each year to reflect the community's evolving priorities. The report raises awareness of Sikh contributions to British society and identifies where policy changes may be needed. Since 2018, I have redesigned the cover and inner layout, including charts and tables, most years, as sometimes they were not able to produce the reports.
Impact
- Policy Influence. The report is cited by MPs and government departments. As a result, it has driven meaningful policy conversations. These include lobbying for a "Sikh" ethnic tick-box in the UK Census, better recording of anti-Sikh hate crimes, and prompting the Ministry of Defence to review Sikh recruitment strategies.
- Social & Economic Insights. The report highlights economic disparities within the Sikh community. For example, it has documented financial pressures facing Sikh women and the disproportionate impact of COVID-19. Consequently, it has helped shape local health outreach programmes.
- Community Dialogue. The report surfaces issues such as mental health and domestic abuse. In turn, it has sparked vital conversations within the community. This has led to increased funding and new initiatives within Gurdwaras.
- Political Mobilisation. The report tracks shifts in Sikh voter allegiances. As a result, it signals to political parties the importance of engaging with the community. Furthermore, it is launched annually at the Houses of Parliament, bridging the Sikh community and policymakers.
