The Sikh Recovery Network is a UK charity that supports Sikhs struggling with addiction, including alcoholism. It was established as a charity in 2019. It brings recovery into the Gurdwara and builds its support around Sikh teachings, including the Sikhi 12 Steps. In 2022, I worked on the charity report design for [report title and one line on what it covers].
Who the report is for
The report speaks to several readers: the Sikh community, policymakers, researchers and the general public. As a result, it had to feel approachable and credible at the same time.
Design approach
I designed the cover and the inner layout, and I developed the charts. Two choices shaped the look of the report.
First, I used a drop shape as both a supporting graphic element and a container for images. The drop can be read as a drop of alcohol or as a tear, which ties the visual language to the subject without needing explanation. It also gave the images a consistent frame across the pages.
Second, I made the cover image black and white. The photo shows a sad person with a glass and bottle beside them. Removing the colour drains the image of vitality, like the memory of a bad moment, and it casts a shadow over the problem the report addresses. It also meant the image did not compete with the background and the drop colours.
Supporting materials
I also designed a flyer and a roll-up banner. Together with the report, they gave the charity a consistent look across its printed materials.
